Ballard Spahr LLP has a new and exciting position available for a Manager of Entry Level Recruiting and Development.  This position supports the coordination and implementation of all firmwide strategic initiatives and activities connected with summer associate and entry-level associate recruiting, arrival, integration and professional development.  The Manager will also serve as the primary point of contact for the early career training and professional development needs of the Firm’s junior lawyers, which includes developing and implementing programs. 


This position reports directly to the Senior Manager of Entry Level Recruiting and Integration, and indirectly to the Client Service & Professional Development Counsel, the Partner in Charge, Attorney Career Advancement, and the Firmwide Hiring Partner. The selected individual will work closely with the Attorney Career Advancement Team to ensure the successful recruitment, integration and development of the Firm’s junior lawyers. 


This is a hybrid position and offers a work schedule of 2-3 days a week in the office.  You must be located in close proximity to our Atlanta, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Sioux Falls, Washington DC or Wilmington office.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Working with Department Chairs, Office Managing Partners, and Directors of Practice Management on an ongoing basis to identify summer associate and entry-level associate recruiting and training needs and seek approval for hiring. Submit projected hiring data for annual budget.
  • Establishing contact with candidates to gather information about qualifications, responding to candidates’ requests for information and convey interview arrangements.
  • Managing relationships with law schools to support the development of a strong pipeline of diverse talent for summer associate and entry-level associate positions.
  • Working closely with the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer on initiatives to attract, recruit, and retain diverse talent, including 1L Diversity Fellowship Programs.
  • Developing and implementing orientation and early careers training programs and working directly with Directors of Office Administration, Directors of Practice Management, and other key stakeholders for assignments, development and integration.

Required Skills:

The Manager of Entry Level Recruiting and Development will be a proactive self-starter with the ability to problem solve and generate innovative ideas and approaches.  Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills, strong technical, communication and interpersonal skills are required as well as judgment, discretion and ability to maintain confidences.  A high level of collaboration is needed to build and foster working relationships with candidates, internal and external presenters, Ballard lawyers and staff across the firm and within the Attorney Career Advancement Department. 

Required Experience:

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years of experience in legal recruiting and/or professional development.  Experience in and understanding of the legal services industry and the market for legal talent is crucial.  The ability to learn the practice areas of the firm at a level enabling the manager to add value in the development of recruiting strategies and training programs.  Must be willing to travel (up to 20%) and to work more than 40 hours per week, if needed to perform essential job functions.
