— N Street Village Mission Statement
N Street Village, located at 13th and N Streets, NW has been serving the neediest women and children of Washington, DC since 1973. The N Street Village Gifts for Mom Program provides homeless and low-income mothers with gifts for their children during the holiday season. For several years the Chapter has assisted N Street Village in their efforts to collect gifts for the Gifts for Mom Program. Just before the holidays each year Chapter members, their firms, and our business partners purchase new toys and gifts for the N Street Village Toy Store. The Toy Store is then opened to the mothers and grandmothers who come to select that perfect gift for their child or grandchild. After the gifts are selected, the women wrap the gifts thus allowing them to feel ownership of the item. Each year, the goal is to stock the Toy Store with over 1,000 gifts that are suitable for infants and children up to 18 years old. Gifts and contributions from Chapter volunteers play a vital role in helping the Gifts for Mom Program come together each year. The Gifts for Mom Program also offers opportunities for members and business partners to give of their time. Volunteers are needed to help decorate N Street Village with Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza decorations, sort and organize the gifts, set-up the Toy Store, and assist the women with wrapping their gifts. Participation is easy and heartwarming! Look for the N Street Village Holiday Wish List early in the holiday season. The Gifts for Mom Program is a great way to get your firm or business involved in a fun and worthwhile project during the holidays. Salvation Army Angel Tree Program
Please note that beginning in 2016, the Capital Chapter is no longer participating in the Angel Tree Program.
The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program has touched the lives of needy children in Washington, DC since 1985. For many years the Chapter has partnered with the Salvation Army in their Angel Tree Program. During the holiday season, Chapter members, local law firms, and business partners "adopt" Angels and provide them with gifts that they might otherwise not receive. Here's a sample of the number of Angels adopted by the Chapter in prior years:
- 2015: 1,807 Angels
- 2014: 2,270 Angel
- 2013: 2,254 Angels
- 2012: 2,400 Angels
- 2011: 2,461 Angels
- 2010: 2,710 Angels
- 2009: 2,370 Angels
- 2008: 2,561 Angels
- 2007: 2,110 Angels
- 2006: 1,510 Angels
To put this in perspective, in 2010 the Salvation Army Angel Tree program helped approximately 6,300 of the neediest children living in Washington, DC. The Capital Chapter adopted 43% of those children and remains the Salvation Army's number one supporter of the Angel Tree Program. Participation in the program is easy! Early in the holiday season Chapter volunteers, solicit member firms and business partners to adopt Angels. Volunteers are then provided with the names, ages, sex, and gift wishes of their Angels. The methods used for soliciting shoppers or collecting funds for purchasing the gifts for the Angels are as varied as the Angels themselves. From bake sales to chili cook-offs, Chapter firms and business partners get really creative with this program. After the shopping is done and the gifts are tagged and bagged, they are delivered to the Salvation Army's distribution center.
